Darwin Museum

Who has not heard of Charles Darwin? More than 150 years passed since publication of his main book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life" but there are still many discussions about it even to this day. It is difficult to estimate the input of Darwin into studies of science. A lot of Biologists from Russia and other countries did a lot of research works in developing and studying evolution theory.

The Russia scientists’ input in study and research was very significant. We can even say that Russia had become a second home for Darwinism due to the fact during Soviet times this theory was extremely popular.

The State Darwin Museum (SDM) was built in Moscow in 1907, under pressure and persuasion of A.F. Kots, a young Russian scientist who was very fond of Darwin. It was during this period of time the Darwin museum acquired reputation of being the first museum of natural history in the world.

Would you like to know more about Darwin, his theory of evolution, and the development of this theory over the last 150 years? You will also have a chance to see more than 5,000 items occupying three floors of the museum building. You will hear different theories of evolutions and even explanations to ecological crises and more. There is an extremely absorbing section in the museum called the Era of the Dinosaurs, where you can see the models of dinosaurs and enormous beasts, with authentic accompanying sounds!

The exhibits have interactive components that make the Darwin Museum one of Moscow's most absorbing museums. You will also be able to see a great variety of animals, birds and fish, delicately preserved insects and butterfly examples.
